Zamzam water: drinking it, buying it and taking it home
Zamzam water is free to drink throughout Masjid al-Haram and Masjid an-Nabawi. To take some home, buy the official sealed bottles from the King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Project for Zamzam Water or its approved outlets.
In Masjid al-Haram
Zamzam is available throughout the mosque from containers and dispensers with cups next to them. In Ramadan 2026 more than 47,000 Zamzam dispensers were placed across the two holy mosques.
The General Authority for the Care of the Two Holy Mosques asks visitors not to open the containers, to put used cups in the places provided, and to use Zamzam for drinking only.
In Masjid an-Nabawi
Zamzam is served chilled and unchilled throughout the Prophet’s Mosque and its outer courtyards. The Authority’s figures for 2026: more than 10,000 Zamzam dispensers, an average of 12,000 bottles a day and 60 drinking fountains.
Official Zamzam bottles
Sealed Zamzam bottles come from the King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Project for Zamzam Water, run by the National Water Company. The plant fills up to 200,000 five-litre bottles a day, and the company sells them from its head office and more than 750 outlets across Saudi Arabia.
Small 330 ml bottles can be ordered through the Nusuk app.
Buy only from the project or its approved points of sale, such as its site in the Kudai district of Makkah. The authorities take no responsibility for Zamzam sold elsewhere.
Taking Zamzam home by plane
Each airline sets its own rules for Zamzam: whether it goes in checked baggage, how many litres, whether it is free and from which airports. Check your airline’s baggage page or ask at check-in before you buy, and carry only sealed official bottles.
Where the water comes from
The National Water Company pumps Zamzam to Masjid al-Haram around the clock, and the water is also supplied to the Prophet’s Mosque. The well is pumped at about 360 cubic metres an hour through some 4 km of stainless-steel pipelines.
Production is fully automated from the well to the bottle, and the company’s laboratories run more than 400 tests a day. In Madinah, the Authority also samples the Zamzam network routinely, from reservoirs to the dispensers.
