Umm al-Qura and moon sighting
The Umm al-Qura calendar is the official calendar used by the Saudi government for dates, documents and the Umrah season. Each month has 29 or 30 days, set in advance from astronomical calculation.
The start of Ramadan, Shawwal (Eid al-Fitr) and Dhu al-Hijjah (Hajj) in Saudi Arabia is announced after the moon is sighted, so these months can begin a day earlier or later than the calendar shows. Other countries publish their own calendars, which can also differ by a day.
