Saudi visa options for Canadians
Canadians can get a Saudi tourist visa online before the trip or on arrival at the airport. Canada's travel advice says Muslim tourists can perform Umrah with any type of visa, while Hajj needs a specific Hajj visa. The Saudi eVisa portal lists Canada as an eligible country.
Tourist eVisa
Stay: One year, multiple entries; up to 90 days.
Umrah: Yes, outside the Hajj season.
Hotel: Book any hotel; no Nusuk Masar requirement.
Fees from Visit Saudi's visa page; dollar figures use 3.75 SAR per USD. The official portal shows the final price at payment, prices can change, and fees are non-refundable. Third-party sites often add their own charges.
How long you can stay is worded differently by different governments: Visit Saudi says up to 90 consecutive days per eVisa, the UK and Canadian governments say 90 days in total per year, and the US State Department says no more than 180 days in 12 months. Plan for 90 days and check the dates on your visa.
How to apply for an Umrah visa from Canada
1Apply on the official siteeVisa portal before you fly, visa-on-arrival kiosk at a Saudi airport, or an Umrah visa package on Nusuk Umrah.
2Book your hotelOn a tourist eVisa you can book any hotel. An Umrah visa needs a licensed hotel recorded on Nusuk Masar.
3Meningitis ACWY vaccineAt least 10 days before you travel (details below).
4Free Umrah permitBook your date and time in the Nusuk app. The Rawdah needs a separate permit.
5Avoid the Hajj seasonUmrah on non-Hajj visas pauses before Hajj. See season dates.
Passport, children and women travelling
A regular Canadian passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date you enter Saudi Arabia. Canadians have been refused entry because their passports had Israeli visas or stamps, or Egyptian or Jordanian stamps from crossings bordering Israel.
Visit Saudi says an eVisa can be issued at any age, but under-18s travelling without a guardian must check their home country's rules. Canada notes that the Hague Convention on child abduction does not apply between Canada and Saudi Arabia.
Canada says women of all ages may travel without a mahram to perform Umrah, and a notarized letter of no objection from a mahram is no longer required.
Saudi Arabia does not legally recognise dual citizenship. If the Saudi authorities consider you a Saudi citizen, they may refuse you access to Canadian consular services.
Vaccinations and travel insurance
Canada says Saudi Arabia has vaccination entry requirements for Umrah travellers, including polio, meningococcal meningitis and yellow fever, and points to the Nusuk Umrah platform for the details. Proof of yellow fever vaccination is required if you come from, or transited through an airport in, a yellow fever country.
The Saudi tourist eVisa includes medical insurance in its price (Visit Saudi). Canada advises travel insurance that covers medical evacuation and hospital stays.
The Saudi Ministry of Health requires the meningitis ACWY vaccine for all Umrah travellers but lists the certificate obligation only for travellers from some countries. The UK government and the US CDC both say proof is required from Umrah pilgrims, so get vaccinated and carry the certificate.
What the Government of Canada advises
As of 17 Sep 2026 Canada advises avoiding non-essential travel to Saudi Arabia because of the volatile regional security situation, and avoiding all travel to Asir, Jazan and Najran provinces and within 30 km of the Yemen border.
Before and during Hajj, Muslim visitors need a valid Hajj visa to board flights to Jeddah, Madinah and Taif. Those with business or tourist visas can still enter through other entry points.
Canada warns of overcrowding risks at religious sites, where pilgrims have been killed or injured in stampedes, and notes the sites are far from the Canadian Embassy in Riyadh. Pickpocketing and purse snatching happen in crowded areas and at holy sites.
Saudi Arabia has extreme heat, especially from May to October, with temperatures well above 40°C. Dehydration and heatstroke can be fatal.
Overstaying brings heavy fines, and you cannot leave Saudi Arabia until the fine is paid.
Canada asks travellers to sign up with the Registration of Canadians Abroad service to get location-specific information.
