How long does Umrah take?
About two hours: the official average time for the Umrah rites at Masjid al-Haram was 115 to 117 minutes in recent months. The trip itself is a matter of days.
Official average time for Umrah
Every month the General Authority for the Care of the Two Holy Mosques publishes how long Umrah took on average, from the courtyards of Masjid al-Haram to the end of Sa’i. Official source
| Month | Total | Tawaf | Sa’i | Courtyard → Mataf | Mataf → Mas’a |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rabi al-Awwal 1447 (Aug–Sep 2025) | 115 min | 46 min | 47 min | 12 min | 10 min |
| Jumada al-Ula 1447 (Oct–Nov 2025) | 117 min | 43 min | 49 min | 14 min | 11 min |
| Jumada al-Akhirah 1447 (Nov–Dec 2025) | 117 min | 46 min | 51 min | 10 min | 10 min |
These are monthly averages. The Authority’s statements on this page do not cover Ramadan or the busiest weeks, when the same rites take longer.
The four steps and where the time goes
- Ihram at the miqat, with the intention. This happens before you reach Makkah, often on the plane.
- Tawaf: seven circuits of the Kaaba, starting from the Black Stone (about 43–46 minutes in the official averages).
- Sa’i: seven laps between Safa and Marwah, starting at Safa and ending at Marwah (about 47–51 minutes).
- Shaving or trimming the hair, which completes the Umrah and ends ihram.
How many days should an Umrah trip be?
There is no fixed number of days: the rites take hours, and the rest of the trip is your choice. What sets the limits:
- The Saudi tourist eVisa allows a stay of up to 90 days.
- Most pilgrims also spend some nights in Madinah; the Haramain train links the two cities.
- The Umrah permit is booked in Nusuk for a date and time, so plan the day you will do the rites.
Plan your dates, nights in Makkah and Madinah and your permit day with the Umrah planner.
