Umrah visa options for Australians

Smartraveller says all Saudi visa holders of Muslim faith may perform Umrah at any time of year except around Hajj, when only Hajj visa or permit holders can enter Makkah. The tourist visa is valid 12 months, allows multiple entries and up to 90 days, and cannot be extended. The Saudi eVisa portal lists Australia as an eligible country.

Fees from Visit Saudi's visa page; dollar figures use 3.75 SAR per USD. The official portal shows the final price at payment, prices can change, and fees are non-refundable. Third-party sites often add their own charges.

How long you can stay is worded differently by different governments: Visit Saudi says up to 90 consecutive days per eVisa, the UK and Canadian governments say 90 days in total per year, and the US State Department says no more than 180 days in 12 months. Plan for 90 days and check the dates on your visa.

Passport, children and women travelling

  • Saudi Arabia requires a passport valid for at least six months beyond the date of entry (Visit Saudi). Smartraveller gives only the general warning that many countries require 6 months' validity.
  • Smartraveller says tourists under 18 may not be allowed to enter Saudi Arabia unless accompanied by a guardian.
  • Saudi Arabia does not recognise dual nationality for its citizens. Dual nationals travelling with both passports can only leave with the passport they used to enter. Entering on a non-Australian passport limits the consular help Australia can give.
  • Women do not need a mahram to perform Umrah, according to the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah.

Vaccinations and travel insurance

  • Smartraveller tells pilgrims to check the health requirements on the Nusuk Hajj and Nusuk Umrah portals before travel. It says a yellow fever certificate is needed if you travel from a yellow fever area, and under-15s from countries with polio outbreaks need proof of polio vaccination. Its Hajj page says to carry your vaccination certificates.
  • The Saudi tourist eVisa includes medical insurance (Visit Saudi). Smartraveller tells pilgrims to have comprehensive travel insurance that covers illness, and warns that insurance may be void in 'do not travel' areas.
The Saudi Ministry of Health requires the meningitis ACWY vaccine for all Umrah travellers but lists the certificate obligation only for travellers from some countries. The UK government and the US CDC both say proof is required from Umrah pilgrims, so get vaccinated and carry the certificate.

What Smartraveller advises

  • Smartraveller's overall level for Saudi Arabia is 'Reconsider your need to travel' (updated 17 Sep 2026). It says do not travel within 30 km of the Yemen border or to Asir, Jazan and Najran provinces.
  • Australians doing Umrah should take a high degree of caution because of overcrowding; people have gone missing during pilgrimages. Stay with your group, share your live location with family or friends, and carry photo ID and emergency contacts at all times.
  • During Hajj, Saudi authorities may limit the airports in Jeddah, Madinah, Yanbu and Taif to travellers with a valid Hajj visa.
  • Smartraveller lists carrying flags or banners, especially during Hajj and Umrah, among things not to do, along with unapproved charity or fundraising and photographing people without permission.
  • Overstaying can bring a significant fine, detention before deportation and a re-entry ban. You cannot leave until the fine is paid, and the Australian Embassy cannot reduce it.

Travel-advice levels change often. Check the official page before you book and again before you fly.

Saudi emergency numbers: 911; ambulance 997; police 999; fire 998.
